What goes into a lesson?

This is always the first part of the lesson. During this time, we will review previously taught concepts and drill our learned sounds. If we are working with a new concept during the lesson, this is also the time when I will explicitly introduce the sound or concept to the learner.

During the second part of the lesson, we will practice reading words. Word lists are customized to each lesson to target the specific concepts we are working on at that time. Word lists provide opportunities for students to decode words that include the new concept we are learning, as well as opportunities to practice concepts that they are still working to master. 

During this part of the lesson, students will practice applying their learned concepts to encode, or spell, words. Like the Reading Words portion of the lesson, this activity includes opportunities for the learner to practice new concepts as well as review concepts we are still working to master. Students will write both individual words as well as full sentences, providing opportunities to practice grammar skills as we work.

During the final part of the lesson, we will apply new and previously learned concepts to a text. This provides learners with a chance to practice decoding words in context. It also provides opportunities to strengthen reading comprehension skills through discussion of the text.
